New Zealand. Can you imagine anywhere better to source a luxurious, natural product like deer nappa? Deer are raised in an environment that thousands of people travel across the globe to experience first hand. And it’s not just that it’s beautiful. Surrounded by the South Pacific Ocean, the country’s isolation also offers practical advantages, including freedom from many of the plant and animal pests which impact on leather producers in other countries.

New Zealand’s deer farming systems are such that there is minimal interaction with the deer. They are raised under the clear New Zealand sky, in well-fenced paddocks, and only bought in from the open when required.

The skins themselves are very different from those sourced in the northern hemisphere. The grain, or “pebble”, can be bought out of the skin, or minimised, during processing – depending on the client’s preference.

Skins can be processed into a range of products – from 0.60-0.70mm, through to as heavy as 1.60-1.80mm – each retaining a soft and spongy feel, thanks to the deer nappa’s low density. And, because they are farmed deer, the skins are a more uniform size, which has distinct advantages when it comes to the practicalities of manufacturing.

The isolation, the farming operations, the consistency of lines, the unique characteristics of the skins – they all contribute to New Zealand deer nappa being truly exceptional leather.

It is, after all, nature’s own creation.
