New Zealand Light Leathers deer nappa is used by some of the world’s leading handbag, garment and shoe designers.

Three qualities make the leather so desirable: finish, handle and colour.

The company’s range of colours is impressive. About 30 new colours are developed each month – some to client specifications, others at the company’s own instigation. European business partners initiate discussions into colours of interest for the spring-summer or autumn/winter seasons. Then the New Zealand Light Leathers product development team begins coaxing the described colours into life. As it does so, it is also mindful that colour depth and penetration are as important as the colours themselves.

The choice of finish offers further potential to beautify the leather. New Zealand Light Leathers’ finishes use a variety of specialist tannages, including a traditional chrome tannage for classic leathers, modern organic and vegetable tannages for pastel colours and aged effects, and a tannage which produces a non-silver tarnish leather.

The company is known for producing particularly good reactive vegetable-tanned leathers. This finish means that the more an item is “worn”, the better it looks – rewarding the owner for the lifetime of the item.

While the eyes are rewarded by remarkable colours and finishes, the hands appreciate the round, mellow handle – the spongy, luxurious feel of New Zealand deer nappa.

New Zealand Light Leathers recognises the importance of product development and works with its clients to identify solutions for any specific product requirements.
